From what I can tell they were taken at roughly the same time – I’m going by the shadows on the deck. The other guy took his photos probably about an hour or two before.

The natural light didn’t make much of a difference as they were both taken on sunny days. There are two things that you can do to light interiors properly:

1) Use an external flash with lots of power and bounce if off the ceiling so the it has a even and natural glow on the rest of the room.
2) Take 3 different exposures of the room without a flash – dark, medium, and light. Set the camera on a tripod and shoot away. Then edit them in Photoshop to get the maximum exposure. It’s called HDR – it’s a bitch, but worth the time and effort.
